Northwestern alumni have access to many of our library services and resources after graduation. Use this guide to learn more about how to access resources into the future.

Visiting the Library

Alumni get the highest level of access and service by coming on campus.   There you can:

  • Browse and check out books.
  • Use our computers, including access to licensed databases and e-journals
  • Locate journal articles in print and online
  • Find a quiet space to work 
    • Current students have priority to study rooms

Rules For Checking Out Books As A Grad

Checking Out Books As A Graduate:

  • You will need to create a graduate account at the information desk. You may also do this by phone or email.
  • You will need a photo ID every time you check out any materials.
  • Checkout limit is 10 items at a time. 
  • You will incur replacement charges for long-overdue books.
  • We will not borrow books from other libraries for .  graduates

  • Academic Search Premier
    Best general resource that covers articles in academic journals and magazines on all topics. Includes all health topics we cover at NWHSU.

  • AltHealthWatch
    Focuses on complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
  • AMED: (Allied and Complementary Medicine)
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    Covers complementary medicine, palliative care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation.
  • Cochrane Library
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    Provides independent high-quality evidence for healthcare decision making.
  • eBook Collection
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    Ebooks covering all topics.
  • eLibraryMN (Electronic Library Minnesota)

    Includes consumer-oriented healthcare information, kid-friendly databases and the ERIC database for educators. Some resources are available in Spanish. These resources are freely available to Minnesota residents, including current NWHSU students.

  • Films On Demand
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    Videos covering numerous Allied Health topics
  • Human Anatomy Atlas
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    3D anatomy tool that includes male and female gross anatomy models, microanatomy models, bone landmarks, muscle attachments, 3D model cross-sections paired with cadaver slices and CT and MRI images, animations and quizzes. Part of a much bigger platform called Visible Body, but don't confuse this with the Visible Body app that your professor invites you to join for a class. This is free and open to all students.
  • NatMed Pro (formerly Natural Medicines)
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only

    Offers evidence-based information about dietary supplements, herbal medicines, and complementary alternative and integrative therapies. Created through the merge of Natural Standard and Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. Look for "Logged In" on the top right. Please use most up-to-date Firefox, Edge or Safari. Doesn't work well in Chrome. 

  • Newspapers (ProQuest U.S. Newsstream)

    Full-text access to US newspapers, newswires, and several TV news shows.  Includes major dailies, (as well as the Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press).

  • Points of View Reference Center
    A good introduction to exploring both sides of hot topics. Entries include points, counterpoints, overviews and the ability to find more supplemental material on the topics.
  • Trip Database
    • Available to current NWHSU students, faculty and staff only
    A Clinical Search engine that sorts information based on quality. It includes images & videos, guidelines (including those from the closed National Guidelines Clearinghouse), systematic reviews and ongoing registered studies.
