Professional Reading

Listings of key journals and magazines to consider for professional reading in your area of study and teaching.

Locating Journals

Staying current in your field requires you to scan the current scholarship. The library offers access to over 40,000 journals.  It's easy to find content via the library's website and sign up for Journal Alerts so the content comes to you. Tables of contents of your favorite journals can be sent directly to your inbox, removing the need for you to go out and hunt for them.

  1. Search for your favorite journal from the library's homepage.
  2. Click the link to go where the electronic (not print) copy of the journal lives. If there's more than one option, choose the one with the most complete coverage dates:

  3. EXAMPLE WITH EBSCO DATABASES:  Many of our journals come from a database provider called EBSCO, which uses the same instructions for setting up journal alerts in all of their databases.
  4.

Setting Up Alerts

To set up an alert, look on the journal page for the alert option.

  1. For EBSCO Databases, use these instructions starting with step #3: EBSCO Connect: How to Use Journal Alerts. Ebsco is in a state of transition to a new interface. Your best bet is to contact Carolyn DeLuca to set these up for you.

  2. For other databases, this is where the experience will be different each time. Look for where you can get ToCs (table of contents) or Alerts or Updates. Could be on the page you landed on, or could be after you click the title of the journal. Could be at the bottom of the page in the footer, or could be in the top toolbar of the page.  The options are basically endless, but you're looking for something like these:

Don't forget, you can always follow your favorite journals on many different social media platforms.

Alerts by Platform

Usually you have to create a (free) individual account to receive alerts via email. You will then receive an email with links that may not immediately connect to our subscription content.  We subscribe to many of these journals, so if you hit a paywall, be sure to check if Greenawalt Library already subscribes to the journal. If so, you get the full-text free from us. If not, you can request the full-text free from us and we'll order it via Interlibrary Loan.
